Step Out Of The Boat

This month’s blog is a follow up to “A Mustard Seed.” Previously we discussed that in order for God to move he needed us to use our mustard seed of faith. This month we will talk about using that faith and Step Out of the Boat. This blog is based off the story of Peter in Matthew 14:22-33. Why don’t we step out of the boat? Well it could be a multitude of reasons but one is fear. Fear is the very thing that paralyzes us if we let it, but we’ve all heard the saying “you can either have faith or fear, but they cannot coexist.”

In Matthew 14:22-33 we find the disciples out at sea and Jesus is up on the mountain by himself praying. Awakened by the wind and waves the disciples begin to freak out and call out for help (this is my interpretation.) In the midst of everything going on they see a figure walking towards them on the water (Jesus was walking on water y’all) and began to be afraid. Jesus then reassures them of who He is and Peter asks v.28- “Lord, if it’s you, command me to come to you on the water.” v.29- Jesus said “Come.” And climbing out of the boat, Peter started walking on the water and came toward Jesus.” As we read on, we see that Peter took his eyes off of Jesus and started focusing on the wind and waves and began to sink.

Question: How many times do we start something but get distracted and start sinking? How often after we begin to sink, do we call upon Jesus to help us focus on Him? I’m going to go out on a limb and say not very often. Most often we allow the wind and waves to distract us, scare us, and then sink us. But something noticed while studying this, is that in Matthew it states Peter stepped out of the boat, but in Mark and John it only speaks of Jesus. What does this mean? Sometimes things are left untold but it doesn’t take away from it happening. Moral of the blog Step Out of the Boat and Walk on Water, Jesus has called you to to do things that everyone else is afraid to do. Accept it and focus on Him and you will not sink.

  1. God has not given us a spirit of fear but of love, joy, PEACE, and a sound mind! God isn’t going to call us out into the water just to let us sink. That’s not even of His character. This was a great reminder.
